Artist Statement The ideals that generally start a piece are those that have gotten me through some hard time, or at least those are the ones that come out the best, brain to canvas. My current body of work are inventive environments that were told to me in a game of imagination and morals. This world, Avalon as he has named it, is a place that I have spent a multitude of hours, both in real life and in dreamscapes, over the past ten plus years. They are as real to me as walking down the street to the corner store, although completely in my head.
Each piece starts off with a very basic line gesture, mostly for structure and general concept. I pen in color formats, emotional tone, and general ideals as to where I want the eye to move. The pieces then take a quick jaunt onto the eternal plane it will call its home, or a canvas. Starting out with a medium gray tone, and slowly patching together areas of general shape and volume of an area. There tend to be many layers of color before I decide on the final one. I work on adding low and high key value at the same time, as I find it more prevalent and comforting that way. Although I rather enjoy the aspects of high detail, I enjoy leaving most pieces in a state of obscurity and a slight blur to create an atmosphere that indulges a dream state to the viewer. I tend to create tenebristic atmospheres, with a play with light source, or environments that color is high in tone to evoke a sort of bliss and positiveness, no matter how dank and dirty the environment is. I only hope my conceptual environments instill adventure and curiosity to the viewer, wanting to ask questions and maybe even come to their own conclusions. |
