Design PhilosophyI find figurative work rewarding, because human figures instantly draw a connection to the viewer. Using the figure in a work communicates direct messages to the viewer, through simple means of facial expressions or gestures. I also enjoy the process of creating a figure. We are eternally insignificantly significant. The harsh reality is that the world can function without you as an individual; however, the world is forever changed by your presence. By breaking humanity down into its most simple state and then building it back up, I can create something the viewer can connect with on a very primal level. The presence of the human element fascinates me and inspires me to branch into a form of storytelling using basic figures. I started adding words with my figures some contain meaning, others just a name. I added context to my figures and expanded into a new style of work.
I quickly realized making fun, vintage-inspired designs with a retro flair inspired by pin up art was for me. Things of the 50s and 60s have spoken to me. They tell stories, have a sense of craftsmanship, and strike the sense of nostalgia. This retro style has affected my work and my stylistic choices. I find inspiration from the hand drawn figures mixed with type. I am very deliberate with my color choices, and use it as a form of expression. Despite the throwback feel, my work is fresh with a glimpse of the past. I also enjoy logo work and branding, making designs that appeal to people of all ages. I deliberately create digital art that still contain the essence of humanity. I keep the human element in my work by using hand drawn typefaces, and hand drawn art. Most of all, I try to show myself in my work. It is my goal as an artist to show the handcrafted nature of graphic design. I don’t want my art to look like something made in a computer, and printed by a machine. A real person made this. I made this. The greatest presence you can feel in art is the it’s creator, and I hope you see a piece of me in every work I produce. |
