Artist Statement My absolute favorite thing in the world is a story. It doesn’t matter if the form it takes is a picture, a song, a book, a film, or all of the above. I adore meeting new characters, seeing new lands, and hearing of new exploits done by the former in the latter. I try to conjure stories out of art, and see the creation of stories as a kind of magic. Fine art especially strikes me as being like alchemy: the process of changing one thing into another.
I use my own particular brand of alchemy to offer a short, often whimsical, glimpse into a bigger story. More often than not, my own pieces rise up from a nonsensical question or concept born out of curiosity. What if a tiger was made up of fireflies? What if a mountain range was actually the back of a sleeping dragon? What if the windmill Don Quixote fought actually was a giant? These questions are then usually followed by: what would that look like; how would I draw that; where in the world did I put my pencil? Seriously. I just had it. I see stories in everything. I use my ever-growing skills as an artist to try to show the rest of the world what I see, using pencil, pastels, paints, and pens. I am an alchemist; where others see a blank canvas, I see the potential for something more precious than gold. Things may not always come out as polished as I’d like; but that won’t stop me from trying. |
