Artist Statement In this particular grouping of works I chose to stretch myself and expose who I am to the public, allowing strangers into a deeper part of me, which is something I rarely ever do. I merged my personal and artistic spheres in order to bring even more emotion into my pieces. I did this by selecting subject matters that are dearer to me than my last grouping of work. Having family and friends in my art is definitely something that is new for me; however, I’m getting to the point where I realize art is my life and therefore it makes sense.
When I create my pieces, I allow the many possibilities of art to come through. Not knowing exactly how one piece will come out is the mystery that draws me to each project. The ability to still be successful in the outcome without having a deep and or calculated thought process behind the work continues to amaze me, and fuels my desire to enjoy the process. I want each piece to be an experience, rather than just a canvas on the wall because this is my life. Because of this, I desire the same for my audience. I want them to have an experience, whatever that may be and however that may come about. I want to take them to a place where they can feel how I feel when creating my works. The way I see it is that my job is done when I finish the work. I don’t wait to see my audience’s response because I refuse to leave approval in the hands of strangers. My mindset is very comparable to music in how some music isn’t for everyone. Not everyone will appreciate my song, but to a certain audience my song is remarkable. I decided to accompany music with my three main pieces in efforts to give the audience the feelings I had when I made each piece. With music being an integral part of my process, I knew that it would add an element to my pieces that I can’t explain or express without the viewer listening to what I hear. Each song is carefully chosen to not only heighten the experience, but to play off of my own experiences with the people I chose as my subjects. |
