Design PhilosophyThroughout our lives, we go through many changes as we learn and grow as individuals. Art and design, however, have been constant, unchanging factors that have defined my life for as long as I can remember. Art has the ability to free the mind, to convey a message, to connect to the viewer. Through my work, I am able to express my thoughts, emotions, and ideas into a visual communication, allowing me to speak without words. My practice in Graphic Design has only enhanced my thirst to successfully communicate visually.
Having the power to design an image that can make someone feel something or alter their perception of a topic gives you the power to elicit social change. For me, the power to inspire positive social change is the ultimate goal I am working towards. Because the good in this world is often overshadowed by negativity in the news and mass media culture, I have always drawn inspiration for my work from the positive, colorful, and often humorous side of society, animals, and the natural world. My designs often incorporate animals and objects in unusual contexts along with the use of bold, vibrant colors, prompting the viewer to relate to the subjects in unfamiliar ways. If I can compel the viewer to relate to an image in a positive way, it may lead that person to have an optimistic outlook when faced with a similar subject in everyday life. By depicting universally recognizable subjects, my work is able to connect all viewers to an idea, regardless of individual backgrounds and interpretations. Although my main area of focus is graphic design, I do not limit myself to any specific medium when inspired. I often incorporate my painting, drawing, collages and photography into my graphic design work. As an artist, I feel that this integration of mediums throughout my creative process allows me to truly express my identity as a designer, leaving a layered piece of myself in every work that I create. |
